My doctor wants me on a new routine. Take a shot, eat breakfast. Take a shot, eat lunch. Take a shot, eat supper. Take a shot, go to bed. Several times a day, in between all those shots, I poke myself in the finger so I can bleed into a little machine. It's true: I have become a human pin cushion. Even though I am feeling better and the numbers on the little machine are going down, I have come to one terrifying conclusion: Diabetes is not for wimps!
I don't know whether it is the new regimen, or knowing I can no longer eat certain foods, or the little man in a red suit with a pitchfork sitting on my shoulder while whispering all things chocolate in my ear, but lately, I've been thinking a lot about food. More like craving food, actually. Like pizza with lots of pepperoni and cheese. Shortcake with lots of strawberries. Pasta with lots of my husband's famous spaghetti sauce. Shrimp with lots of scampi sauce. I could continue with this list, but I'm making myself hungry, and I haven't even had breakfast yet.
I agree with Virginia Woolf when she said, "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well. Hmmm...right now, I'd really like to dine well on some bacon and eggs with a side of hash browns.
Did you know there's a passage in Hebrews 5:11-14 that speaks about dining well? At the end of some instructions about not falling away from the faith, the writer of Hebrews add these words: "We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."
