Hospital dedicates St. John’s Chapel

ANDERSON, Ind. — St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital renamed its chapel on Tuesday to pay homage to its past.

About 70 people attended the dedication service of the newly christened St. John’s Chapel just inside the main lobby doors at the hospital. The chapel was named after the Catholic St. John the Evangelist in honor of the name the hospital carried until 2013 during a merging with St. Vincent.

The ceremony also celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the hospital being part of the St. Vincent Health System. Oz Morgan, chairman of the operations board at the hospital, said the event was an important observance of the heritage of Catholic-based health care.

“Technology has advanced, and the world seems to change so quickly today, but care and compassion are what anchors us to the community. It’s part of our heritage. Part of who we are,” Morgan said.

Hospital Administrator Tom VanOsdol also led visitors on a tour of the new heritage wall in the front lobby just outside the chapel. The wall features a pictorial timeline of the hospital and changes throughout its history since 1894. Visitors were also given details about the new wooden door that encloses the chapel as well as the Walking Sister, an 11-foot statue of a Catholic nun, just outside the main doors.

“This is all part of the transition of renaming the hospital and to celebrate our partnership with St. Vincent. We wanted a way of linking our present to our past, and I think keeping the names from the past does that,” VanOsdol said.

The chapel previously opened to the rest of the lobby and is now enclosed by walls. As part of the dedication services, the driveway outside the main lobby doors was renamed “St. John’s Way.”

“It’s all about celebrating our heritage and reminding us of the past,” said hospital marketing vice president Marlene Carey.

St. Vincent is part of the largest Catholic health care system in the country. Anderson Regional Hospital changed its name from Saint John’s Health System to St. Vincent this year, but the hospital has been a St. Vincent partner for the past 10 years.
