School Changes: South Madison

First day: Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Initial enrollment: 4,158, up from 4,149 last year.
Key dates: No school on Labor Day, Sept. 7; staff development day Sept. 18; fall vacation, Oct. 28-30; staff development day, Nov. 25; Thanksgiving break, Nov. 26-27; winter break, Dec. 21-Jan. 3; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18; Presidents Day, Feb. 15; March 5 (unless makeup day needed); spring vacation, March 29-April 2; April 16 (unless makeup day needed); May 7 (unless makeup day needed); Memorial Day, May 31; last day of school, June 4.
What you need to know: More middle school students will have access to school buses this year, with the move of Pendleton Heights Elementary from its location in town to behind the high school. Pickup points will be on State Street, Water Street, South Pendleton Avenue and in front of the former middle school on East Street. Details will be posted on the school corporation’s Web site. ... An elementary school open house is scheduled for Monday from 6-7:30 p.m.
What’s new this year: The $34 million Pendleton Heights Middle School opens near the intersection of Indiana 38 and 300 West. A dedication and open house will be Sept. 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. ... The former middle school site will be the new Pendleton Intermediate School for grades 5-6. This realignment also shifted some students from Maple Ridge Elementary, easing crowding at that school.
