School Changes: Shenandoah

The Herald Bulletin

Shenandoah School Corporation

First day: School started Friday.

Initial enrollment: About 1,380, comparable to last school year.

Key dates: No school on Labor Day, Sept. 7; fall vacation, Oct. 22-23; Thanksgiving vacation, Nov. 26-27; Christmas break, Dec. 19-Jan. 3; spring vacation, March 29-April 2; Last day of school is May 26.

What you need to know: With ISTEP moving to tests increasingly focused in the spring, the district intends to adjust remediation programs. Classroom teachers will put more emphasis on review than in years past before moving to grade-level-appropriate curriculum.

What’s new this year: Full-day kindergarten is open to all students for the first time this school year. Superintendent Ronald Green said that full-day kindergarten was offered to Title I students at Shenandoah in the past two years. The district waited to offer full-day kindergarten to all students at a time when parents would not have to pay a fee for the program. ... Stimulus funding will double the number of Title I teaching assistants in elementary schools.

Who you need to know: Superintendent Ron Green, 354-2266. E-mail rgreen.k12.in.us.
