ALEXANDRIA — Madison-Grant’s bats provided plenty of offense on Wednesday night for its Central Indiana Conference season-opener.
Unfortunately, its gloves were a little less efficient as Alexandria defeated the M-G Argylls 5-4 on a walk-off passed ball.
Suffering the tough loss, Argylls’ starter Sara Webster went seven innings, scattering four hits, walking two and striking out seven.
Class 2A Madison-Grant (5-3, 0-1) held the lead 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but several errors flipped the score 4-3.
Class 2A Alexandria (6-5, 1-0) scored their first run on a passed ball. Sarah Almack earned the win for the Tigers.
Argylls’ Bonnie Parker slugged a two-run home run in the fourth, her first longball of the year, to go with a double. Dana Runyan hit her third home run this year in the second inning to give Madison-Grant a 1-0 lead.
Alexandria’s Kylie Bischof finished 3-for-4 with two doubles. Chelsea Baledge scored the winning run.

SHENANDOAH 11, NEW CASTLE 4
Limited the night before, the Shenandoah Raiders’ offense erupted at home against visiting New Castle, leading to a sound 11-4 victory.
The Class 2A Raiders scored eight runs through the first two innings to jump ahead 8-1. Shenandoah (2-3) added a three-run bottom of the sixth to finalize the tally, racking up 10 hits overall.
Yardley Collett recorded the win, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks.
Laken Goff went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a double. Stacy Kinnett went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair. Emily Hayes finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.

CARMEL 3, PENDLETON HEIGHTS 2
The Class 4A No. 1 Pendleton Heights Arabians’ quest at a perfect season came to an end as unranked Class 4A Carmel slipped past 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Up 1-0 after four innings, the host Greyhounds rallied for three-runs in the fifth, and limited the Arabians to one run in the seventh to fend off the visitors.
Lindsey Beisser recorded the loss despite striking out five and walking none in six innings.
Erin Falkenberry drove in a run on her lone hit. Meanwhile, Tiffany Held finished 3-for-4 for the Arabians (8-1).

BLACKFORD 9, ELWOOD 1
The Class 3A Blackford Bruins came into Elwood ranked fifth in the state, and left with their undefeated record intact, beating the Panthers 9-1.
Kayla Rider provided the host Panthers (3-3) with the team’s lone run via an RBI-double in the seventh. Brittany McPhearson finished 2-for-3.
Blackford (6-0) knocked two home runs in the game to drop Elwood’s Central Indiana Conference record to 0-2.

BASEBALL
HIGHLAND 12, MUNCIE CENTRAL 1, 6 innings
The Class 4A Highland Scots jumped out fast and never relinquished, defeating Muncie Central 12-1 in six innings on the road Wednesday.
Losing to Richmond 9-5 the day prior, Highland used a nine-run top of the second to rebound and even their season record to 2-2.
Josh Bargo recorded the win and both Spencer Benge and Chase Freeman hit home runs for Highland. Benge’s bomb was a two-run blast, pushing his RBI count to three. Freeman’s solo shot highlighted his 2-for-3 performance. Taylor Hopkins finished 2-for-2 with four runs scored, a double, and RBI and two stolen bases.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 13, MUNCIE BURRIS 8, 8 innings
The Class 1A Liberty Christian Lions refused to go down without a fight on Wednesday night. Tying the game in regulation behind a three-run top of the seventh, Liberty Christian used a six-run bonus frame to defeat Muncie Burris 13-8 in eight innings.
Tim Zeigler picked up the win, pitching an eight-inning complete game with nine strikeouts.
Zeigler drove in four runs and went 2-for-5 from the plate. Josh Freeman added three runs scored. Freeman, Zeigler, Joe Huff and Rob Earley each logged a double.

ANDERSON 16, MISSISSINEWA 2, 5 innings
The Anderson Indians went big early, and easily disposed of visiting Mississinewa in five innings 16-2 at Memorial Field.
The Class 4A Tribe scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first and concluded the day with a four-run fourth, pushing their season mark to 4-1.
John Collins recorded the win, and Nolan Earley drove in a team-best five runs. Earley finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a two-run home run. Zach Gooding went 2-for-4 with two runs. Marcus Robinson scored three runs and went 2-for-3. Jake Bolinger scored twice and hit 2-for-3.

TAYLOR 14, MADISON-GRANT 8
The Class 2A Madison-Grant Argylls grabbed a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but Taylor’s consistency was too much on Wednesday. Scoring eight runs down the stretch, Taylor seized the lead in the second and never let go, winning 14-8.
Skyler Nolder supplied a three-run home run for the Argylls. Madison-Grant dropped to 2-5 on the year with the loss.

HAMILTON HEIGHTS 20, ALEXANDRIA 0, 5 innings
The Class 2A Alexandria Tigers lost control quickly on Wednesday, falling to Hamilton Heights 20-0 in five innings.
Austin Quinn recorded a double for Alexandria (2-4).

FRANKTON 10, CENTERVILLE 9
Frankton’s offense supplied an early cushion, and the bullpen shut the door as the Class 2A Eagles defeated Centerville 10-9 at home on Wednesday.
The Eagles (4-4) jumped ahead 9-1 after three innings and added an insurance run in the sixth as the Bulldogs rallied with nine runs combined in the fifth and sixth.
Nate Cress sealed the game from the mound with both Nick Justice and Garrett Robinson each driving in a pair of runs. Codey Harrison went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Scott Davis was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

GOLF
YORKTOWN 155, ANDERSON 176
The Yorktown Tigers defeated the Anderson Indians at Edgewood Country Club on Wednesday 155-176.
Tigers’ Joe Gasser earned medalist honors with a score of 36.
Anderson’s best golfer was Spencer Morris (41) followed by Patrick Freeman (42), Chase Austin (46), Eric Elpers (42) and Nate Smith (47).

TRACK & FIELD
BOYS
BULLDOGS STILL UNDEFEATED
The Lapel Bulldogs boys track and field team’s undefeated streak continued on Wednesday. Overtaking host Shenandoah (71), the Bulldogs racked up 78 team points with Daleville finishing third.
Lapel claimed first-place medals in six events. Corey Mason won both the discus (97’ 9 1/2”) and shot put (38’) events.
The Bulldogs (6-0) captured seven runner-up placements.

LAPEL DOMINATES AT SHENANDOAH
The Lapel Bulldogs girls track and field made short work of the competition at Shenandoah, pushing their season record to a flawless 6-0.
Finishing with 80 team points, the Bulldogs placed first in 11 events and runner-up in two.
Host Shenandoah was second as a team with 65.5 points accrued. Daleville was third.

ARABIANS TOPPLE SCOTS
The Pendleton Heights girls track team won 10 events and swept four events as they defeated host Highland 81-49 on Wednesday.
Highland grabbed five first-place medals with a balanced effort in the 100-meter dash, long jump, 200-meter dash, shot put and discus.
