INDIANAPOLIS — Pendleton Heights’ softball team, ranked No. 1 in the most recent Class 4A poll, went 2-2 in games played Friday and Saturday at the Ben Davis Tournament, running its record to 11-3.
The Arabians lost 4-3 to Perry Meridian on Friday, then followed that up with a 9-3 win Saturday over Decatur Central, a 7-0 loss to Class 4A No. 10 Franklin Central and a 12-0, five-inning win over North Central.
Shonda Garringer went 2-for-4 against Perry Meridian and Decatur Central, and tripled against Franklin Central. Erin Falkenberry was 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs against Decatur Central, then went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and a triple against North Central. Lainie Dishroon earned the win in both games for the Arabians.
Track and Field
Scots winners at Muncie Central Relays
MUNCIE — For the first time in school history, the Highland boys track team walked away from the Muncie Central Relays winners, sprinting ahead of the competition in dominant fashion.
Behind five first-place medals, three runner-up placements and three third-place finishes, the Madison County champion Scots tallied 109 team points with Huntington North second overall at 90. Muncie South was third at the event’s 70th annual running.
Scots’ junior Jamie Mallory collected four four ribbons on the day, placing first in the 100-meter dash and also as a member of the 400-meter relay team composed of Nathan Walters, Trey Messer and Maurice Hall.
He added a second-place finish in the sprint-medley relay along with Derrick Hill, Messer and Hall.
Mallory joined with Sam Nunn, Hill and Justin Lark for a third--place run in the 1,600 meter relay.
Sophomore D. J. Taylor finished second in the two-mile run with a school-record time of 9:52.
Ethan Wilkinson won the pole vault. Kerry Detienne was first in the shot put and Hill was first in the high jump.
Detienne also garnered a third-place finish in the discus. Earlie Ivey was runner-up in the long jump, and Tyler Moore was third in the high jump.
Softball
Highland wins two
The Scots defeated Western 7-3 and Noblesville 5-1 in a pair of games, improving to 6-3.
Katie Lee pitched a complete game and went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to defeat the Panthers. Lauren Williamson matched Lee’s complete game in the win over the Millers. A four-run third inning made the difference, during which Highland hit for the cycle. Stormy Holder was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs; Jarah Ice went 3-for-6 in the two games combined. Kayla Byrne went 2-for-4 with a double against Noblesville, and Lee tripled against the Millers.
Anderson 2-14, Logansport 4-4
The Indians ran their record to 4-5 with the North Central Conference doubleheader split against the host Berries.
Freshman Kendra Walters scattered six hits in a complete-game effort to win game 2. Jordan Harrington collected two hits and drove in four runs, including a bases-clearing double. Lacy Stephens added three hits, and Erica Couch added two.
Couch had a double and two RBIs in the first game. Harrington went 3-for-4 and totaled five hits on the day.
Alexandria 9-7, Wapahani 4-7
The Tigers split a doubleheader with the host Raiders to run their record to 8-6.
Andrea DiRuzza, Molly DiRuzza and Erin Overman each went 2-for-4 for Alexandria in the 9-4 first-game win. Andrea DiRuzza homered, Molly DiRuzza tripled and Overman doubled, while Sarah pitched five innings en route to the win.
Overman went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double in the 7-2 game two loss. Erin England went 2-for-4, and Emalee Wyatt was 2-for-3 with a double.
Shenandoah splits pair
The Raiders defeated Clinton Prairie 14-2 in five innings and lost to Eastern (Greentown) 4-0 to move to 3-6.
Mary Spiker hit her first career home run with a two-run shot in the third inning to open the scoring against the Gophers. Spiker, Kasey Short and Mackenzie Williams combined to limit Clinton Prairie to four hits. Other offensive standouts included Laken Goff (4-for-4, two RBI and a double), Tiffany Stoker (2-for-3, two doubles with three RBIs) and Yardley Collett (3-for-4, three RBIs).
Goff and Amanda Townsend each had two hits for the Raiders in the loss to the Class 2A No. 8 Comets.
Liberty Christian
12-11, Randolph Southern 2-1
The host Lions needed just five innings in each game to defeat the Rebels and improve to 3-4.
Karon Earley struck out 10 batters in the first game and 11 more in the second game. She also collected three hits and two RBIs in the second game. Other game 2 highlights include Shelley Lehman (two hits, including a three-run triple), Hannah Whitaker (two hits, a double and two RBIs) and Erika Lindley (two hits and a double).
In the first game, Kate Driskell hit a three-run home run and Genevieve Brumfield went 2-for-2 with a double.
Madison-Grant 10-4, Northwestern 0-2
The visiting Argylls improved to 8-3 after a doubleheader sweep over the host Tigers.
Cady Riggs hit solo home runs in the second inning of each game, and went 5-for-6 on the day. Bonnie Parker was 4-for-7 on the day with a double and two RBIs in the first game, and her three-run home run gave M-G the lead for good in the second game. Sam Fields went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the first game, and Sam Yeagy was 2-for-3 in the second game.
Cortney Stephens and Christen Cawthorn combined to limit Northwestern to a three-hit shutout in the first game, and Sara Webster pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing one earned run in the second game.
BASEBALL
Anderson 13-12, Connersville 8-1
The Indians combined for 25 runs in two games en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Spartans at Memorial Field.
Anderson (7-1) defeated Connersville, a potential sectional opponent, 13-8 in the first game. Tyler Campbell hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and a three-run shot in the first. Zach Gooding drove in three runs of his own. Daniel Puckett earned the win on the mound, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs in six innings.
Drew Hollon’s sixth-inning grand slam ended game 2, a 12-1 AHS win cut short by the 10-run rule. Hollon also hit a solo shot in the second. Jake Vicars, Nolan Earley and Zach Gooding each collected two hits, while John Collins pitched five innings for the win. He and Dustin Cannon combined to allow just three hits.
Wapahani 8, Alexandria 6
The visiting Tigers (2-5) scored three seventh-inning runs, but could not complete the rally against the Class 2A No. 2 Raiders.
Kaleb Tatman went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, and Drew Overman was 2-for-3 with a two-run blast. Garrett Hosier was 2-for-4, and those three accounted for all of Alexandria’s six hits.
BOYS GOLF
Arabians third at Huntington North
Pendleton Heights’ Jake Groninger shot an even-par 72 at LaFontaine Golf Club to claim second individually and help the Arabians to a third-place team finish at the 11-team Huntington North Invitational.
Brian Stanley posted an 81 to rank second for PH. Michael Maxwell and Tyler White (84 each) rounded out the Arabians’ scoring.
Second-ranked Mishawaka Marian won the meet with a 312. Pendleton Heights posted a 321, while Liberty Christian was 11th with a 416. No individual information on the Lions was available.
Lapel wins Eastbrook Invite
The Bulldogs edged Southwood 323-325 to win the 10-team tournament at Club Run Golf Course.
Lapel’s Brody Williams was second overall with a 1-over-par 73. Seth Bays shot an 83 and was fifth overall, while Brock Forrer’s 83 was good for sixth overall. John Hettinga’s 84 completed the Bulldogs’ scoring.
Elwood was third with a 357, while Madison-Grant was seventh (378) and Alexandria was ninth (396). No individual information from those teams was available.
AU Softball
The Ravens swept a pair of games against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Hanover at Raven Field, winning the first contest 9-4 and the second 13-4.
In the first game, Gretchen Louzon led the Ravens (11-17, 5-3 HCAC) with three hits and three RBIs, including a double. She also earned the victory on the mound.
Erin Garrity had two hits and three RBIs and Kelly Shuck had three hits and an RBI.
In the second game, Chelsie Haines and Thompson each had three hits and five RBIs. Haines had three doubles and Thompson had a double and a home run.
Garrity had three hits, three runs and two RBIs, including a double.
Kelly Thompson was the winning pitcher, walking three and striking out eight.
AUBaseball
The Ravens dropped both ends of a doubleheader to HCAC foe Mount St. Joseph at Raven Park, losing the first game 9-4 and the second 14-3.
In the first game, Chris Jarrett led the Ravens (17-13, 7-7 HCAC) with a double, triple and an RBI. Eric Smith had two hits and a run and Lapel graduate Brad Lantz and Pendleton Heights graduate Brad Schnepp each had a double and an RBI. Cody Young extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single.
In the second game, Jarrett led the offense again with three hits and an RBI. Lapel graduate David Addington had two hits and a run, including a triple. AHS graduate Stephen Jones added an RBI double.
