Monday area roundup: Scots' Stagman medalist

Highland golfer Austin Stagman picked up medalist honors with an 18-hole score of 82 at Monday’s Olympic Athletic Conference meet at Willow Brook Golf Course.
Connersville took the team title with a 343, followed by the Scots six strokes back at 349. Jay County was next with a 374 and Muncie South shot 417.
Stagman and teammate Andrew Hanna were both all-conference for the Scots as the latter fired an 85. Also for Highland, Zach Bailey carded an 89, while Trey Knight shot 93 and Brandon Selig had a 101.

Guerin Catholic 172, Liberty Christian 186
The Lions came up short in a match played at Plum Creek Golf Course in Noblesville.
Junior Alex Stinson was meet medalist with a 37, followed by teammate Evan Gibson’s 39. Other LC scores were Joel Girt and Scott Baker with 54s, Mark Hendricks with a 59 and Jordan Thomas’ 61.

Cowan 177, Frankton 181
The Eagles came close, but couldn’t defeat Cowan at Maplewood Golf Course.
Jordan Hiatt was low score for Frankton with a 42. Jeff Reed had a 45, as did Austin Taylor. Ryan Spangler and Trevor Hiatt both produced 49s for the Eagles.

Baseball
Pendleton Heights 11, Alexandria 0
The visiting Arabians pounded out 12 hits while limiting Alexandria to two thanks to the pitching of Tyler Holloway.
Holloway struck out three Tigers, while at the plate Nick Burke, Sean Collins and Nate Clem contributed two hits apiece as Pendleton Heights improved to 16-6.
Clem’s hits accounted for three RBIs, while Kaleb Tatman’s two hits led Alexandria.

Mississinewa 11, Daleville 0
The Broncos’ record dipped to 13-6 as Mississinewa used a five-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Blue River 5, Liberty Christian 2
Ray Vartanian delivered two hits for the Lions and senior Tim Zeigler struck out 12, but it wasn’t enough for host Liberty Christian (5-10).
Blue River’s four-run top of the eighth put it over the top, snapping the 1-1 deadlock that sent the game to extra innings.

Frankton 13, Wes-Del 12
Visiting Frankton scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a wild one that featured 25 runs, 15 hits and nine errors.
For the victorious Eagles (8-10), Scott Davis provided three hits and three RBIs, while Garrett Robinson and Cody Ryan each had two hits. Ryan scored four of Frankton’s runs, Robinson three.

Softball
Shenandoah 11, Cowan 1
Yardley Collett struck out six Cowan batters in picking up the win, which improved the Raiders to 11-10 on the season.
All together Shenandoah produced 13 hits.

Alexandria 2, Blackford 1
Sarah Almack pitched to pick up the win as the host Tigers clinched a tie for the Central Indiana Conference title.
Now 16-9 overall and 6-1 in league play, Alexandria’s big bats belonged to Molly DiRuzza (RBItriple), Andrea DiRuzza (single), Joni Dent (sacrifice fly) and Maira King (double).

Elwood 8, Eastbrook 6
The Panthers notched their seventh victory of the season behind the two hits apiece from Kayla Rider, Tiffany Stephens and Jamie Runyan.
Anderson 4, Mount Vernon 2
The Indians evened their season slate at 10-10 with a road victory against the Marauders.
Senior pitcher Johnna Rebenack got the win for the Indians. At the plate, Chrissy Stephens had three hits and Erica Couch two to go along with her three RBIs.

Girls tennis
Shenandoah 5, Randolph Southern 0
The Raiders blanked Randolph Southern thanks to straight-set singles triumphs from Laura Wilson, Mariah Smith and Kelly Ray. The doubles tandems of Alyssa Bennett-Lindsey Rice and Brittany Webber-Emily Vetor also went the straight-set route for Shenandoah.

Highland 5, Knightstown 0
No. 1 singles player Alex Hammel and No. 3 singles Abby Beard both posted 6-0, 6-0 shutouts as the Scots ran their record to 19-0.
Mercy Scott won her No. 2 singles match by a 6-0, 6-3 count. In doubles, Kelsey McFadden and Ashlan Allison won 6-0, 6-0, while Highland’s No. 2 doubles combination of Alaina Coplin and Michaela Hammel won, 6-0, 6-1.

Boys track & field
Lapel 99, Sheridan 23
The Bulldogs are now 9-0 entering Thursday’s sectional at Mount Vernon after handling the Blackhawks.
Freshman Chandler Guion won the high jump (5-8), the long jump (18-3 3/4) and teamed with Jayson Mills, Trent Crandall and Brooks Busch to take home a blue ribbon in the 1,600 relay (3:57.39).
Among the other winners for Lapel were Mills capturing the 110 high hurdles (16.8) and the 300 lows (43.3), Busch winning the 800 in a time of 2:21.9 and Crandall taking the 1,600 in 5:15.7. Cory Mason was a double winner, taking the shot put with a best of 43-10 and the discus with a top heave of 111-6.

AREA SPORTS
Donnelly to play baseball for AIA
Former Highland and current Anderson University baseball player Jacob Donnelly has been selected to play for Athletes in Action.
Donnelly, a pitcher, will join his AIA players to travel to Nicaragua for three weeks this summer to play baseball and do mission work.
