ANDERSON — Four quarterfinal matches were contested during Tuesday’s girls varsity singles action in the Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic with three of the top four seeds advancing to the semifinals.
No. 1 seed Marcy Huck defeated Melissa Montgomery 6-1, 6-1. Mariah Smith defeated No. 2 seed Katie Wilson 6-0, 6-2. Meaghan Ellis, the No. 3 seed, downed Sarah De Nardin 6-2, 6-3. No. 4 seed Sidnay Huck needed three sets to get past Valerie Ginther 4-6, 6-4 and 11-9 in a super tiebreak.
In the mixed varsity doubles round of 16, Brett Ellis and Katie Vasalakas defeated Lauren Dawson and Nathan Glaze 6-1, 6-1.
Father/son doubles play had David and Bret Ellis defeat Felix and Francis Muhiga 6-2, 6-2. Josh and Jim Mullins defeating Kendall and Tim Ryan 6-1, 6-1. Brachen and Zach McCurdy defeated Brian Hersberger and Zack Wright 6-0, 7-5.
Area players in East-West All-Star games
Several area athletes were selected to participate in the first East/West Softball/Baseball All-Star games at Blackford High School this Saturday.
Pendleton Heights saw outfielder Casey Jamerson and pitcher/first baseman Lindsey Beisser selected to the East Team. Arabians softball coach Scott Hall was named as an assistant to the East squad.
Alexandria had three players named to the East team, pitcher Sarah Almack, shortstop Andrea DiRuzza and outfielder Erin Overman.
Alexandria had two members from its baseball team selected to the Eastern All-Stars as infielders Jordan Baker and Corey Smith were named to the 1A/2A East team.
Frankton pitcher Nate Cress was named to the West 1A/2A roster.
Games start at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday at Blackford. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
