ALEXANDRIA — The Shenandoah football team met little resistance Friday night as it defeated Alexandria 34-0, giving the Tigers their 13th straight loss dating back to the end of the 2006 season.

Shenandoah quarterback Jacob Chapman sparked the Raiders (2-0) early by passing for two touchdowns and 79 yards in the first quarter.

Chapman finished the game with three touchdowns and 140 yards on 6-of-8 passing. Senior Cory Criswell added a passing touchdown for the Raiders late in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard toss to Bristan Jones.

“Alexandria had nine or 10 guys in the box all night, and they were just daring us to throw the ball,” Shenandoah coach Scott Widner said. “So we completed a couple of passes and got it done that way.”

Chapman’s two touchdown passes in the first quarter came within two minutes of each other, vaulting the Raiders to an early lead.

Chapman, who is filling in for injured quarterback Zack York, completed a 32-yard screen pass to Luke Hamm with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter for the first score of the game.

On the first play of the next possession, Chapman threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Cody Young, who caught the ball in stride as he was streaking down the sideline.

“Chapman is just an example of the kind of kid we have that can come in and do his job,” Widner said.

Alexandria, however, had trouble mustering much offense in the first quarter. The Tigers accumulated only seven yards and failed to get a first down in the period. Alexandria ended the game with 68 yards of total offense and three first downs.

“Three first downs ... wow,” Alexandria acting-head coach Greg Kyle said. “We get a small drive going, and we have a penalty ... that hurts. We talked about momentum, and we have to keep that going. I wasn’t really happy with our ball handling. That’s something we have to work on, and we will go back to the drawing board.”

Alexandria committed four turnovers in the game: three interceptions and a fumble. Quarterback Chance Morphew completed only one pass for 18 yards, while Landon Glass was the leading rusher with 26 yards on eight carries.

Shenandoah rushed for 129 yards on 34 carries. Tyler Pugsley had the lone rushing touchdown with a 6-yard score in the fourth quarter. Luke Hamm, who ran for 237 yards in the Raiders’ season opener against Tri, was held to 70 yards.

“(Hamm) got his fair share tonight,” Kyle said. “He knew he got hit, and we were able to take him down for some losses.”

Hamm was still able to lead the Raiders with two receiving touchdowns. Like the touchdown in the first quarter, Hamm caught a screen pass from Chapman in the third quarter for a 16-yard score.
