ANDERSON — Maddie Shannon began her preparation for the next level of tennis Tuesday.
The winningest singles player in Lapel High School history, Shannon faced a more senior opponent in a semifinal of the Women’s A Singles division of the Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic at Anderson University.
It was a tough test for Shannon, but she passed it. Theresa Magenthaler extended Shannon deep into both sets, but the recent Lapel graduate came through 6-4, 6-4.
Shannon returned to singles action for the first time since her Bulldogs fell to Delta in the Marion regional final May 23, and she was still in top form (she played a doubles match in this event Saturday).
“I had a few mistakes; I was having trouble with my serve,” Shannon said. “But once I got into the rhythm of it, I was OK.”
Shannon’s serve was broken in the first game of the match, but she broke back the next game and then went ahead 2-1. She won a couple of games later in the set in which there were several deuces.
In the second set, Shannon went ahead 3-1 and was able to hold off Magenthaler, a Hamilton Heights graduate who attends Indiana Wesleyan University and has been trying to get on that tennis team, Shannon said.
“I always like playing people that are older than me and especially if they’re at another level,” Shannon said. “It’s really a good experience, especially against a player like her.”
Shannon said Magenthaler made her go after some tough balls, and playing a match like that gave her things to think about when she plays for Hanover College beginning this fall.
“I think I got back into the groove real quick,” she said.
Shannon will play in the Women’s A final Saturday afternoon against either Alexys Rastetter or Diane Silberberg, who meet Thursday. Silberberg defeated Bella Roark 6-3, 6-4 in a first-round match Tuesday night.
Also Tuesday, the Varsity Mixed Doubles finalists were determined, and it will be teams from Lapel and Shenandoah meeting for the title Saturday.
Lapel’s Jesse McCurdy and Zoe Freer won in a tiebreaker over Mary Sayre and Matthew Etherington of Alexandria (6-1, 4-6 in the first two sets). Morgan Nation and Seth Nation took the other semi, 6-1, 7-6 over Luke Waggener and Sophia Wilkinson.
In a Varsity Boys Singles quarterfinal, Anderson’s Austin Mote defeated Alexandria’s Trevor Simison 6-2, 6-1, and Mote’s semi foe is Nation. In the other semi bracket, it is Shenandoah’s Cory Evans against Conner Murphy of Mississinewa.
Morgan Nation and Alexandria’s Lindsie Chaplin won their Varsity Girls Singles quarters to set up a semi matchup. Nation bested Mia Meyers of Anderson 6-1, 6-0 and Chaplin won 6-3, 6-0 over Abby Williams of Frankton. Anna Carl (Anderson) and Rylee Fuller (Connersville) face off in the other semi.
The A Mixed Doubles draw saw Roark and Seth Nation beat Silberberg and Rishi Patel 7-5, 6-2 in the first round, and in a semi it was Alex Poe and Claire Liles over Ben McCurdy and Abby Ervin 6-0, 6-0. Roark and Nation meet Poe’s father Dennis and Anne Luke Thursday.
