Angie Colip: Weekend packed with bowling events for all

This weekend is jam packed with bowling events. Today and Sunday provides the opportunity to see a live professional bowling tournament.

Last weekend’s qualifier saw three local bowlers earn the opportunity to test their skills against the best of the best.

Congratulations to Austin Mefford, Tim Jarvis and Kevin Shafer. These men had the top three scores of the PBA Qualifier last weekend at Cooper’s. They have earned a spot to compete in this weekend’s PBA Central Regional Tournament.

Bowling on the Scorpion Sport Pattern, Mefford won the event with a 619 series. Shafer shot a 617 and Jarvis shot a 598 to advance.

Competing against professional bowlers is an opportunity that only a few amateurs can claim. These three men will get just that chance on Saturday. The tournament begins at 2 p.m. at Cooper’s Sport Bowl.

The top 16 scores of the day will advance to the finals on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. Come out and cheer on these locals and your favorite professional.

This week produced four perfect games.

Lucky Strike in Elwood witnessed three of those. Brandon Hartman rolled a 300 game and finished the night off with a 749 series. Ron Boyland’s 300 came with a 741 series. Sammy McPhearson also shot that elusive 300 game this week.

Jason McCord shot his perfect game in the Charlie Cooper Memorial at Cooper’s and finished his night off with a 749 series.

Also this weekend is a free coaches clinic sponsored by the Indiana Bowling Proprietors Association.

On Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Cooper’s will play host to a one day clinic for all high school and middle school coaches. Steve Kunkle, the president of the state’s youth association, will conduct the event.

Special guest speaker and pro bowler Brad Angelo will also be there to give tips on coaching. Angelo will be giving demonstrations on and off the lanes.

This Tuesday is the start of the high school bowling season.

Anderson High, Pendleton Heights and Anderson Preparatory Academy will begin bi-weekly practices at 4 p.m. at Cooper’s.

Both boys and girls are encouraged to take advantage of this sport where no one sits the bench. All members get the opportunity to bowl.
