Chapman wins semistate title

Congratulations to Layna Chapman for winning the high school semistate championship this weekend! This is Chapman’s senior year at Anderson Preparatory Academy.

Chapman put together great games of 228, 212 and 255 for a 695 series during qualifying. That put Chapman in the number one spot for the day. She waited patiently for her turn as the step ladder finals began.

No. 3 seed Annalee Sisk of Rossville defeated No. 2 seed Devin Elmlinger of Avon by rolling a perfect game. As Chapman watched to see who her opponent would be, she kept her focus with some pacing and singing. Sisk was on a roll and the question was would she keep that momentum going or would the adrenaline be too much to continue her streak?

The game stayed close all the way through with neither one taking a big lead. After a few lead changes by only a few pins either way, Chapman put the pressure on by finishing first with a 214. Sisk bowled well with a 204, but fell short.

Chapman will compete in the singles event tomorrow at Woodland bowl in Indianapolis with a 9:00am start time. Chapman won regional and repeated by winning semi-state. Good luck, Layna, and keep the streak going.

Mason Ward of Alexandria rolled games of 220, 233 and 279 for a 732 series to qualify as the second seed for the boys. Ward faced number four seed Robert Rawley of Franklin Community in his step ladder match. Shooting a 237 with one awkward frame, Ward hit his ankle during his approach on a string of strikes, Rawley took advantage and shot a 257 game to win the match. Rawley went on to win the championship match defeating No. 1 seed Tanner Orebaugh of Covenant Christian.

Also advancing from the area on the boys side was Nicholas Squires of Pendleton. Squires shot a 684 series with games of 226, 232 and 226 to advance him to the state finals.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
