Lady Tribe makes big plays for sectional title

CONNERSVILLE — Short-handed and down 10-0 at the start, the Anderson Lady Tribe rallied for a 43-41 triumph to win the sectional tit le here Saturday night.

Dabriona Williams, Friday’s hero with 26 points, struggled to find the range all evening. But she still had the confidence to drive to the hoop and hit a layup with 23 seconds left to put the Tribe ahead of Mount Vernon to stay.

“When I drove the first time on (6-foot center Erica Moore) she hit me so hard,” said Williams of her decision to drive. “I knew I had to stop and go around her.” The ball bounced on a rim for a fraction of a second before falling through for a 42-41 Anderson lead.

The Marauders called a time out and set up what everyone expected, penetration by sophomore guard Sydney Shelton. Anderson did manage to cut off her drive and she dished to Moore inside. She missed the shot but a foul was called on Jacie Dickerson, her fifth of the game.

With 6.2 seconds left on the clock, Moore had two free throws that could put Mount Vernon ahead. She missed both of them badly to the right. Anderson rebounded and was fouled. But it was only the sixth team foul of MV.

The Lady Tribe called time out and then got the ball in to Samia Carter. She went to the line for a one-and-one free throw opportunity. She had to hit the first and she did. The second bounced off the rim and the Marauders had the ball.

Shelton drove the length of the court, found a crease and drove the right side for a point-blank shot. I rolled over the rim and out and the Indiansz had the title.

Kez’Aniqu Gosha topped the Anderson offense with 16 points and her contributions to the offense were critical with Chelsea Bentley and Ania Daniels on the bench with injuries.
