AU men's team closes season with a win

---- — ANDERSON — The Anderson University men’s basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Earlham College 74-73 on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Senior Day.

Micah Smith’s layup at the buzzer was the game-winner as he drove the length of the floor in four seconds after a pair of missed free throws by Earlham. Smith finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, hitting 3-of-4 field goals and 6-of-9 free throws in the game.

Max Mollaun led the Ravens with 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists, making 7-of-19 shots and 3-of-5 free throws, including four 3-pointers. Scott Schwieterman was also in double figures with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists, making 7-of-13 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws.

Nate Gross had six points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Brett Anderson added six points off the bench on a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Carson Breckenridge chipped in with a basket and four rebounds in his final game.

Anderson shot 41 percent from the field, including 8-of-24 from 3-point range and 16-of-24 free throws. Earlham finished at 46 percent shooting, incuding 7-of-16 from behind the arc and 20-of-26 from the charity stripe.

The Ravens had a 38-34 advantage on the boards, including 16-8 on the offensive glass. AU also had the edge in points in the paint (32-30), assists (16-14), turnovers (8-11) and points off turnovers (9-7).

There were nine ties and seven lead changes in the game, including five in the final three minutes of the game.

AU led for the first 32 minutes of the game, including 38-35 at the half. They led by as many as nine points in the second half and still controlled the game at 59-52 with just under 11 minutes remaining. Earlham used an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the half at 60-59 with eight minutes left.

The final eight minutes saw five ties and six lead changes. Smith’s free throw with 51 seconds left tied the game at 69 and Mollaun hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to give the Ravens a 72-70 lead. However a 3-pointer by Earlham with eight ticks remaining gave the visitors a one-point advantage. That set up Smith’s heroics in the final four seconds.

AU finishes the season 6-19 overall and 6-12 in the HCAC.

Women’s Basketball

Earlham 73, Anderson 61: Shelby Shaffer led the Ravens with a career-high 25 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals, hitting 9-of-17 field goals and 3-of-7 free throws, including four 3-pointers. Her previous career-high was 20 against Lindenwood.

Mallory King had 14 points and four steals, making 5-of-13 shots and both her free throws, including a pair of 3-pointers. Megan Williams was also in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior Nyomi Defiel had six points and four rebounds and other senior Jenna Wittenberg played three minutes and had a rebound despite starting with a leg injury.

Anderson shot 41 percent from the field, including 6-of-15 from 3-point range and 9-of-21 from the free throw line. Earlham finished at 44 percent shooting, including 4-of-15 from behind the arc and 21-of-28 from the charity stripe.

Earlham had a 40-34 advantage on the boards, including 16-15 on the offensive glass. The Quakers also had the edge in points in the paint (30-28), points off turnovers (19-16), assists (11-10), second chance points (16-11) and steals (10-7).

AU finishes the season 2-23 overall and 1-17 in the HCAC.
