Korn, Eagles hitting their stride at right time

FRANKTON — It's the kind of number that turns heads.

Frankton senior Aaron Korn's 47 points Tuesday night at Muncie Central were a school single-game record, and they helped push him past Kelsey Key to claim the Eagles' career scoring mark for either gender.

They also matched the Bearcats' point total when Korn left the floor late in the fourth quarter of what became an 83-54 domination at Muncie Fieldhouse.

But Frankton head coach Brent Brobston insisted less than 24 hours later that his Indiana All-Star candidate didn't really alter his game much to reach such dizzying heights.

"He obviously shot extremely well," Brobston said, referencing Korn's 18-for-21 effort from the field. "He stepped up and scored some big baskets for us, especially in transition. But the neat thing about him has always been that he gets a lot of his shots in the flow of our offense."

The Eagles didn't set out to make history at Muncie Central. Well, beyond the fact the schools were meeting in boys basketball for the first time.

Korn entered the night needing just 19 points to catch Key on the career scoring list, and with a regular-season game remaining Friday against Sheridan at home, there was no rush.

The more immediate concern was the absence of starting point guard Austin Compton — the team's leader in rebounds and assists — who sat out with an illness and remains day-to-day. Frankton rotated four players at the point — led by twins Conner and Cameron Bates — and found a way to make it work.

"Austin's a heck of a player, and I would love to have had him out there," Brobston said. "But all our kids took it to heart. They wanted to get the job done for him. That's one of the things that's really special about this team."

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
