Elwood holds off late Apache charge

ELWOOD, Ind. — London Leavell made a pair of free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining, and the Elwood boys basketball team held on to beat Wabash 69-65 in its final home game Friday night.

The Panthers (12-9) led by double figures for much of the contest and took a 55-44 advantage into the final period. But Jared Bourff, who scored a game-high 22 points, picked up his fourth personal foul just 32 seconds into the fourth quarter and didn't score for the remainder of the game.

Bourff went to the bench with 7:13 remaining and returned at the 4:08 mark. In the interim, Elwood actually expanded its lead from 55-46 to 62-52. But the visiting Apaches (9-11) began a game-changing run shortly thereafter.

It started with a 3-pointer from Christian Hall and a time out with 2:38 to play. It ended with an 8-0 run and the hosts clinging to a 64-60 lead.

Griffin Hughes, making his return from suspension, gave the Panthers some breathing room by making one of two free throws with 34.1 seconds to play. Kodi Clemons, who led Wabash with 15 points, answered with an acrobatic drive to make it 65-62.

Hughes went back to the free-throw line with 14.9 seconds remaining, making both to cap a 13-point night. But Roger Davis' deep 3-pointer at the other end kept Wabash alive and forced Leavell to put the game away.

Elwood had runs of 13-0 in the first quarter and 10-0 in the second but led just 35-27 at the half. An 8-0 third-quarter run gave the Panthers a 15-point lead at 47-32, and the game appeared to be all but decided.

But the Apaches fought back with a balanced attack.

Davis (12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds), Jordan Blair (11 points) and Hall (10 points) joined Clemons in double figures for Wabash. The Apaches also won the rebounding battle 28-22.

Both teams shot extremely well. Elwood hit 55 percent (22-for-40) of its shots, and Wabash scored at a 52.1 percent (25-for-48) clip. The difference came at the free-throw line, where the Panthers knocked down 17 of 25 opportunities. The Apaches shot just eight free throws, making seven.
