Frankton seniors spark 69-31 rout of Sheridan

FRANKTON — Frankton shook off a lackluster first half and celebrated Senior Night in grand style with a 69-31 victory over Sheridan here Friday night.

The victory put the Eagles’ record at 19-2 and that set a school record for wins in a season.

That made a night honoring seniors Aaron Korn, Jordan Reeves and Zach Stephenson even sweeter. Korn led all scorers with 16 points with Stephenson added 11 and Reeves had eight. Only junior Nick Wright crashed the party with 10 points.

“That senior group has been part of three conference championships, our only sectional title and 19 wins in a season for the first time ever,” said Frankton coach Brent Brobston. “That kind of speaks for itself.”

Yet the first half was anything but sparkling. The Eagles hit just 11-of-30 shots and were getting outrebounded by the Blackhawks at intermission. Frankton was up 31-19 at that break.

“We were taking too many 3s,” said Brobston. “They were open shots and when we have good shooters, they will take them. But we needed to go inside and then back out.”

But the halftime discussion was mostly about something other than shot selection.

“We talked about defense, defense, defense,” said Brobston. The talk did wonders.

Frankton scored the first 24 points of the second half to vault to a 55-19 advantage. The Eagles scored 12 points before Sheridan got off a single shot. The home team liberally used 11 players from that point forward for the convincing win.

The Eagles finished with a 34-30 rebounding edge. Reeves led the way with eight boards.

Frankton is still feeling its way without junior point guard Austin Compton, who is still hospitalized with an illness.

“I thought Conner (Bates) stepped in and established himself in the third quarter,” said Broston. “He’s played point all year so it’s not like it’s a surprise to him to have him out there. He got us into what we needed in the second half.”
