Legends complete weekend sweep

ANDERSON — Shortly after the Fort Wayne Pro-Am All-Stars finished their game against the Anderson Legends on Friday night, the team captain sought out Troy Taylor.

A standing-room only crowd filled the auxiliary gymnasium at Anderson High School, and the Fort Wayne team was impressed. The captain told Taylor, who serves as the Legends' CEO in addition to playing guard, he wishes the All-Stars could get the same level of support from their city.

"I just want every team that plays us to have that same experience," Taylor said.

Things have been going nearly as well on the court for the National Basketball Development Leagues Association (BDL) franchise. After routing the Indianapolis Kings in an exhibition game two weeks ago, the Legends scored their first two regular season victories this weekend.

Anderson beat Fort Wayne 168-118, then took its act on the road with a 126-108 win at Indianapolis on Saturday. A third game was scheduled against the Fort Wayne Flight of the Central Basketball Association on Sunday but was postponed because of winter weather.

"We're playing phenomenal," Taylor said. "Everybody thinks we've been playing for years, but we've only been playing together for about three weeks."

The Legends' winning streak figures to be tested next weekend.

The Pittsburgh Bullets will bring their 6-0 record to Anderson High School for a 1 p.m. tipoff Sunday. With a team made up entirely of Pennsylvania residents, it will be a new experience for both opponents.

Taylor has done his homework and believes the game should be a tight battle.

"They match up well with us, and we match up well with them," Taylor said.

Anderson's early box office success has come as a surprise to Taylor. He wasn't sure he was prepared to take on the responsibility of running a franchise when he was first approached to lead the Legends.

But he prayed on the issue and received reassurance from his mother. The community response has left him grateful and a little overwhelmed.

"Thank you just isn't enough," he said. "We don't want to disappoint. We want to continue to build this fan base for the future."
