Lions make quick work of Union

ANDERSON — In diving, the degree of difficulty will earn a competitor extra points. It works in reverse in basketball.

Liberty Christian came off a stretch of losing two of its last three games and made the Union Rockets the victims Monday night with a 77-30 home victory.

The Lions' share of the home team's shots were easy because of the propensity of the Liberty players to make the extra pass. So even the 10 times the Lions launched 3-pointers were mostly uncontested looks.

"We did a great job of sharing the basketball," said Liberty coach Jason Chappell. "Our kids want to see their teammates succeed. Sometimes we take the one-pass shot. Often, it is a way to score quicker to work the ball."

Liberty hit 29-of-49 from the field for 59 percent. That compared to the Rockets' 13-of-49 firing for 27 percent.

"Union is a better shooting team than that," said Chappell. "We forced them to take outside shots. We didn't use any full-court pressure, and we didn't even trap in the half court."

The Lions scored more than 20 points in each of the three quarters where their top eight players did the bulk of the work. Four scored in double figures.

Junior Vincent Phillips led all scorers with 16 points, missing just one shot.

"Pendleton turned him into a beast," said Chappell. "He has a little bit different role for us. We need him to shoot a little bit more."

Franklin Nunn scored 15 points, missing just two field goals. He displayed the slam dunk he has in his arsenal. Chris Nunn added 14 points, and Ben Bowen contributed 13. Preston Quinn scored just four points but had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Lions completely dominated the glass. They grabbed 49 boards compared to 14 for Union.

"I will take 49 rebounds any time," said Chappell. "We used some rebounds to get run-outs."

The Rockets only had five players who scored. Senior Nick Glaser paved the way with 10 points, eight of those coming in the first quarter.

Liberty Christian's (4-2) next contest is at Anderson Preparatory Academy on Friday. The loss dropped Union to 4-3 on the season.
