Several local bowlers moving to semistate

All in all it was a successful trip to Richmond last weekend for the high school bowling regional.

Anderson Preparatory Academy’s Layna Chapman was crowned champion for the girls singles division and Mason Ward of Alexandria won the boys division.

Chapman qualified second after a three-game format, rolling a 616 series. After defeating No. 3-seed Desirea Guild from Centerville, 183-180, Chapman faced top seed Emily Craun of Knightstown. Chapman found her groove, while Craun was unable to put anything together. Craun struggled to shoot a 155 while Chapman easily won with a 257 game.

Ward qualified in the final spot in the step ladder final as the No. 4-seed rolling a 644 series. Ward started the step ladder by defeating number three seed Austin Sawicki of Knightstown 184-164. The number two seed, Patrick Thomas of Muncie Southside, fell to Ward 217-184. Ward picked up momentum, shooting a 256 in the final match to defeat the number one seed Kyle Martin of New Castle who shot a 203 game.

Also moving on to semistate was Nicholas Squires, a freshman from Pendleton, who qualified in the No. 5 spot. Squires rolled a 642 series to miss the step-ladder finals by only two pins.

Falling just short of moving on to semistate, was Pendleton’s Dylan Holford. Only 11 boys move on to the next step and Holford finished in the 12 spot, missing the cut by six pins.

Alexandria’s boys team took charge again qualifying as the No. 1 seed with an accumulated 2,971 series. The team competition consists of bowling two regular team games and five baker games.

After patiently waiting to see who they would face in the championship match, it was a moot point. With a two game baker roll-off, they claimed the title of regional champs.

Only taking four teams on to semistate, Pendleton finished tied for fifth place with Centerville and missed the cut by a mere five pins. Anderson finished in seventh place .
