LAPEL, Ind. — The dynamic duo of Aaron Korn and Austin Compton combined for 46 points as Frankton defeated Lapel 70-62 in the fifth place game of the Madison County Boys Basketball Tournament on Friday night at the Doghouse in Lapel.

Korn finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks while Compton added 21 points, five rebounds and five assists. They were also a combined 15-of-25 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

“The last two games Compton has played under control and gotten better and Korn has done his job leading us and making big shots,” said Frankton coach Brent Brobston. “Our offensive execution was much better tonight.”

Frankton finished at 50 percent shooting, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range and was 21-of-26 from the free throw line. Korn and Compton combined to hit 12-of-16 from the charity stripe, including 6-of-6 in the final minute.

Lapel was led by Tanner Watkins with 27 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals, hitting 10-of-22 shots, including five 3-pointers. Mitchell Richardson was also in double figures with 10 points and Drew Norton added eight points.

“Tanner played well, but when he has to score that much we aren’t as good,” said Lapel coach Jimmie Howell.

Lapel finished at 42 percent shooting, including 8-of-19 from 3-point range, but just 4-of-9 from the free throw line.

Guard-turned-forward Brandon Cerry was also in double figures with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, despite his 5-foot-11 height inside. He also had four assists in 28 minutes.

“They out-toughed us,” said Howell. “We scored 10 points from five post players. It’s pretty bad when you have to put a 5-11 guy in the post. We just didn’t have any posts that could finish inside.”

“We defended well in the third and fourth quarters,” said Brobston. “I thought we went on the road and beat a good team.”

Frankton (7-4) hosts Madison-Grant next Friday while Lapel (5-6) hosts Hamilton Heights next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Alexandria 45, Anderson Prep 40

The Alexandria defense forced 27 turnovers as it defeated Anderson Prep Academy 45-40 in the seventh place game of the Madison County Boys Basketball Tournament.

“I challenged the team to step up and to play to the goals that we set this week and that was to be better than we did the first half of the season,” said Alexandria coach Chad Wetz.

Layton Carroll led the Tigers with 13 points and five steals, hitting 3-of-6 field goals and all six free throw attempts. Landon Breese had eight points, six rebounds and Blaize Kelly added five points and seven rebounds. Braden Warren chipped in with five points, three rebounds and five steals.

“Evan Hodges, Brandon Wright and Dane Johnson came off the bench and brought a lot of intensity,” said Wetz. “The bench played great.”

Anderson Prep was led by Tyler Smith-Johnson with 14 points and Leo Harris was also in double figures with 12 points.

Tony Gillispie added seven points, 10 rebounds and Lewis Gray chipped in with five points, three rebounds and three steals.

“Unfortunately we’ve played very similar to the last five games — one good half and one bad half,” said APA coach David Bradford. “When our offense isn’t working we shut down. Not only didn’t we score, but we turned the ball over.”

Alexandria (2-10) hosts Elwood next Friday in a Central Indiana Conference contest at 7:30 p.m. Anderson Prep (1-9) travels to Fall Creek Academy on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
