Proctor, Arabians sweep sectional golf titles

NOBLESVILLE — After starting off his sectional round two-over through the first five holes at Purgatory Golf Course, Pendleton Heights’s Colin Proctor made a charge that included three birdies in his final six holes to take the boys’ golf sectional medalist title, leading the Arabians to the team title in the process.

Proctor shot a one-under 71, winning medalist honors by two shots over Noblesville’s Jackson Wright, who came in second-place with a 73. Proctor and Wright, along with Hamilton Southeastern’s Johnny Watts played in the final group of the three teams who came in favored to make it out of the Noblesville sectional.

At the turn, Wright carded a 36 on the front nine to lead Proctor and Watts by a stroke, but Monday’s medalist said he managed to play a bit more aggressive on the closing holes, and it paid off.

“I didn’t know how everyone stood, but I knew to win medalist as an individual, I was going to have to go low the last six holes,” Proctor said. “I played the last six holes at three under. Jackson is a great player and so is Johnny, and they were both beating me at the time.

“It’s a lot easier to be aggressive when you’re playing from behind, and that’s what I was doing. I made a few 15-footers the last six holes that just nudged me ahead of them.”

The team title came down to the final hole, where Pendleton led Noblesville by a single stroke. Proctor hit one of his longest drives of the day and managed to reach the par five 18th hole in two shots. Wright hit his approach shot to within a couple feet and tapped in for birdie, but Proctor managed to two-putt for his own birdie and clinch the second title in three years for the Arabians by a single stroke.
