DEFIANCE, Ohio —
The Anderson University baseball team won the first game of its weekend series against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance 9-6 on Friday at Rutter Field.
The Ravens led 9-0 after eight innings but had to hold off a late rally by the Yellow Jackets. Defiance plated six runs in the top of the ninth and loaded the bases before Blake Hall entered the game and retired the last two batters for the save.
Zack Hufferd led the Ravens offense with three hits, three runs and two RBIs, including two doubles and a home run.
Jordan Ball had two hits and four RBIs, including a home run, and Cole Heberling had two hits and two runs scored, including a double.
Jeremy Shelmadine and Austin Young added two hits each for the Ravens, who outhit the Yellow Jackets 14-12.
Dan Schmitz earned the victory on the mound, allowing six hits and no runs in eight innings while striking out nine with three walks. The save was the second for Hall this season.
AU (7-8, 3-1 HCAC) plays a doubleheader at Defiance on Saturday at noon. The Ravens will be the home team in all three games since the games were originally scheduled for Anderson before weather wiped out playing conditions.
