AU roundup: Ravens baseball sweeps doubleheader

DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Anderson University baseball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College 10-7 and 6-0 on Saturday in a doubleheader.

In the first game, Ryan McPike led the Ravens offense with three hits and two RBIs, and Zach Garcia had three hits.

Austin Young and Connor Morris had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored each, and Cole Heberling added two hits and an RBI.

Nolan Schaefer earned the victory on the mound, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 7 2/3 innings while striking out six and walking three. Tyler Watson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save, allowing two hits and no earned runs.

In the second game, Jake Eaton tossed eight shutout innings on the mound to earn the win, allowing five hits while striking out two. Andrew Enderle tossed the final inning, striking out three without allowing a hit.

Chad Kirkpatrick and Jacob Craft had three hits each to lead the offense, and Jeremy Shelmadine added two hits and an RBI. Zach Hufferd chipped in with a double and two RBIs.

AU (9-8, 5-1 HCAC) plays IPFW on Monday at Victory Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

SOFTBALL

FRANKLIN — The Anderson University softball team lost the first game to HCAC foe Franklin College on Saturday 4-3, but rebounded to win the second contest 11-4.

The loss snapped the Ravens HCAC-record 22-game winning streak, which dates back to May 6, 2011, when they lost to Defiance in the conference tournament. It also snapped their 21-game regular season winning streak with the last loss coming to Bluffton on Apr. 23, 2011.

In the first game, AU outhit Franklin 14-8 but was 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 stranded on base, including at least two runners in each of the last four innings.

Amy Wuestefeld led the Ravens with three hits and an RBI, and Lys Hess had three hits and a run scored. Lauren Smith added two hits, and Nichole Frazier and Katie Lee chipped in with RBI singles.

Devin Moorman took her first HCAC loss in 12 starts, allowing five hits and four runs while walking four without a strikeout. Her last loss was a 2-1 decision against Transylvania on Apr. 17, 2011.

Sami Frazier threw three shutout innings of relief, allowing three hits and no runs.

In the second game, Yardley Collett led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, and Wuestefeld had three hits, two runs and an RBI.

Katie McCool and Lee each had two hits and two runs scored, and Nichole Frazier added a hit and an RBI.

Hannah Belvo improved to 4-1 on the mound, allowing eight hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings while striking out one. Smith tossed the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one and no runs hit while striking out two.

AU (8-6, 1-1 HCAC) travels to HCAC rival Manchester on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
