Rick Bramwell: Feeling under the weather, missing out on fish

The Herald Bulletin

---- — About every three out of four years, I brag about staying outdoors keeping me healthy in the winter. Then the weather changes, and I get a severe sinus infection. For a week, I think my body will heal itself. Finally, I go to Dr. Wright for some horse pills. Everything tastes like burnt cabbage, but I'm getting better — hopefully, well enough to join good friend Bob Porter who is already killing the big Patoka crappie.

Porter has been emailing me pictures of 12.5-inch Patoka crappie for over a week. Monday, he said, "I finally caught a 13-incher today. They are so shallow, I am taking my fly rod tomorrow."

He uses homemade jigs under a homemade bobber.

I have an open invitation to join Mr. Porter. There is an area he calls 16-inch branch. When the slabs move in there, I'm headed south.

I was close to Monroe Reservoir on Saturday night but not to fish. I slept three hours on daughter Jourdan's sofa then drove her to the Indianapolis airport. Then I drove home and fried fish for grandaughter Hayley Bramwell, who was on spring break from Indiana State.

Jourdan flew to Portland, Ore., to interview for a master's program at Portland State. Wednesday she flew to San Francisco for a like interview. She has already exposed her educational talents to the University of Colorado and Auburn.

Jourdan graduates from the School of Health at IU this May.

According to the Indiana DNR, a new trout stocking location for 2014 will be springing up in Greene County.

Midland Lake at Hillenbrand Fish & Wildlife Area is 22 acres with a paved boat ramp and shoreline access. By April 1, DNR will have stocked 1,000 rainbow trout in the lake.

Both a trout/salmon stamp and a fishing license are required for all anglers targeting rainbow trout. The stamp costs $11.

A trout/salmon stamp can be purchased anywhere fishing licenses are sold or online at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov. Statewide trout bag limits on lakes is five fish per day with a minimum size limit of 7 inches.

Additional rainbow trout stockings in the area also include Airline Pit in Greene-Sullivan State Forest and Maple Lake in Terre Haute.
