2014 THB Girls Basketball Athlete of the Year: Da'Sha Boyd

ANDERSON — Sometimes when a good team has a large collection of really good talent, it is hard for a single player to emerge as the best player on that team, let alone the best among a collection of 11 teams.

Anderson High School senior Da'Sha Boyd came from just such a situation, playing for the Lady Tribe team that was one of only two in this area to win a sectional title.

Yet Boyd managed to turn heads while contributing to the team goals. She averaged 15.7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2.3 assists while hitting 49 percent of her field goals and 71 percent of her free throws.

Still, not all of her contributions can be found in that collection of statistics.

"She has been our most poised person who has played for us the past four years," said Anderson coach Chad Cook. "She performed no matter what the pressure, no matter what the score."

Boyd often drew the opponent's best offensive threat and made use of her physical gifts and determination.

"She has such long arms," said Cook. "She can guard and rebound. She also had a lot of deflections."

Boyd had an upbeat reaction to her selection as Player of the Year.

"I am very excited," she said. "I have never been honored with an award."

Her favorite thing about this past season, her final one for the Indians, wasn't her individual or team achievements.

"We had a lot of good players on our team, and they played hard," said Boyd. "My teammates were my favorite part and the way we bonded together. We hadn't had that my previous three years."

"Her teammates allowed her strong suits to come out," said Cook. "She had "Chelsea (Bentley) on the wing and Samia (Carter) on point, and those three seniors will be really missed as will our other seniors (Kez'Anique Gosha and Donjanae Chamberlain). But what Da'Sha did allowed the others to shine as well. It's hard to find someone like her. We'll just have to build something else for next year."
