Overnight Update

March 29, 2014

Rick Teverbaugh: Lots of options available

Even though Hoosier Park’s opening weekend is finished and the high school basketball season was completed Saturday, there is plenty to occupy the sports fan today as we finally get some spring-like weather.

Locally there are two big items that are recommended.

At Anderson Speedway the season will finally have weather fitting the racing season. Today’s opening event will showcase the CRA Late Model Sportsman and ThunderCars in twin 75-lap features al ong with a Legends feature.

Practice begins at 12:30 p.m., with qualifying beginning at 2 and racing at 3. There’s no reason to skip this high energy event — unless you are a softball fan.

Anderson University has one of the best softball teams in the Midwest and the Ravens are off to a big start. Unfortunately, all of it has been on the road. Today is the first chance to see this team at AU. They play a double-header against Franklin beginning at 1 p.m. This was also postponed from Saturday due to the cold and snow.

The Ravens’ field is always in great condition and should be good to go today.

Not all of the basketball is out of our system. The NCAA Midwest Regional of the men’s tournament will be held today at 5:05 p.m. After a pair of nail-biters on Friday, today’s battle for a the Final Four between Michigan and Kentucky should be worthy of your attention.

There might not be the frenzy and the rival hatred that was evident in the Louisville vs. Kentucky game Friday, but that chance to play for a national championship will be all the motivation needed to gear up these teams.

Lucas Oil Stadium is sold out, but there might be fans from Louisville and Tennessee who might have unloaded tickets before heading home. So tickets might be available outside the stadium. Of course, those comfortable with staying home can view the game on television.
