Douglas inherits experienced Eagles roster

FRANKTON — Brad Douglas first began toying with the idea of coaching the Frankton baseball team in 1992.

As a sophomore player, he developed a love for the game and for the Eagles' way of playing it.

"That's when I decided if I ever had the opportunity (to coach the team), I was going to jump at it," Douglas said.

He did just that on Feb. 13, accepting the job to replace Greg Hughes and taking over a program that finished 14-9 a year ago and returns one of the area's top pitchers.

Logan Weins will toil next season at Western Kentucky, but Douglas will get to enjoy the ace's final high school season first. After posting a 5-1 record with a 1.31 ERA and striking out 58 hitters in 37 1/3 innings last year, Weins sat out the basketball season this winter to focus on the diamond.

In his first start last week at Marion, he fanned 11 batters in six innings as Frankton scratched out a 4-0 victory.

"Obviously, the cupboard wasn't bare," Douglas said. "I've known the Weins family for quite awhile. Not every coach gets to start his career with a D-1 prospect leading the rotation."

Pitching figures to be the Eagles' strength, despite the loss to graduation of Chase Smith who went 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA and three saves a year ago.

Senior Austin Webb returns after posting a 2-2 record in seven starts last season, and he'll be joined by juniors Bailey Threat and Brycen Downs and sophomore Bryce Mallernee.

The every day lineup took a hit with the graduation of Trevor Hughes, T.J. Eads and Jon Griffey, but there's plenty of experience back.

Senior left fielder Matt Kunce will help lead the way after hitting .375 with one homer and 21 RBIs in 2013.

"He really works on his craft a lot," Douglas said. "As I'm getting to know him, I'm seeing that the kid's a baseball junkie. He's a very good high school hitter."

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
