Arabians finish third in Horseshoe Classic

PENDLETON — It wasn’t the place they wanted to be playing for, but the Pendleton Heights softball team won its final game of the day to finish third in the Horseshoe Classic on Saturday.

The Arabians finished the day at 2-1 with a 6-2 victory over Chesterton.

Pendleton Heights got knocked into the consolation bracket in the second game of the day, losing 3-2 to Jennings County on a wind-aided home run.

“It was just a routine fly ball, and just like that you’re playing for third,” said PH coach Rob Davis. “But we battled back. Our motto is ‘Never give up’ and thought we kept fighting.”

The finale was a bit of a test for awhile. The Arabians used Emily Morris as the starting pitcher. She gave up a run in the first and another in the third, and in those two innings combined the Arabians made three errors.

“I think we’ve made more errors in the first five games than at any time since I’ve been here,” said Davis. “That’s something we’ll get fixed.”

The bats were also slow to come around in the first few innings of the nightcap. Delilah Wright had her team’s first two hits, with the one in the third inning driving in Breanna Pryor to cut the deficit to 2-1. But the score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth.

“We’re not being aggressive enough,” said Davis. “Other teams are swinging at all three strikes, and we’re looking at the first two and then trying to attack the third. I thought we did better in the second half of the game (against Chesterton).”

Pryor started the fifth by reaching on an error. Sarah Dixon then hit a sharp grounder that hit Pryor, but it hit her after the Chesterton first baseman made a play on the ball so Dixon was credited with a single. Heather Wendling sacrificed but reached safely on an error.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
