Many girls tennis teams return top talent

ANDERSON — With spring sports getting off to a good start thanks to some spring-like weather last week, local girls tennis teams are taking to the court.

Several teams have to replace top players but there are several letter-winners back from last year as well as a solid crop of freshmen and sophomores looking to take over varsity roles.

Madison-Grant, the defending Madison County Tournament champions who begin defense of that title today, lost its top singles player (Kristen Mercker) to graduation but returns Leslie Hudson, who went 18-4 last year.

Pendleton Heights, defending sectional champs, returns its top two singles players in Carly Wilson and Emma McCardwell as well as the No. 1 doubles tandem of twins Audrey and Kayleigh Corn.

Alexandria lost top singles player Sarah-Kate Brenner and even though several players return, coach Matt DeVault will be at the helm of a young team. No one was hit harder by graduation than the Anderson Indians, who lost six starting varsity players.

Lapel and Frankton lost some key members but also return several top players from last year. Lapel will have depth and Frankton returns top singles player Alexys Rastetter, who went undefeated in the regular season last year.

TEAM CAPSULES:

ALEXANDRIA TIGERS

Coach: Matt DeVault

Letter winners lost: Sarah-Kate Brenner, Abby Matthew, Shanna Kelly

Letter winners returning: Abbie Miller, Hannah Libler, Alisha Paddock, Danielle Maynard, Sarah Holder

Newcomers: Kennedy Aiman, Macie Cox, Abby Ford, Colleen Matthew, Anna Etherington

Coach’s outlook: “I am extremely excited as this is the youngest team we’ve had at Alexandria in my time as a coach. It will be fun to see us grow over the next couple of seasons and I feel we will be right back near the top quickly. Many of the teams we see are bigger and senior heavy so it will be fun to watch us compete. I am proud how each year we are able to fill in and be one of the top programs in the area. For such a small school, we have developed a special program.”

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
