Rick Bramwell: Improving weather should aid morels

When I looked at my wilted daffodils Tuesday morning, I knew this would be a setback for morels. The long-range forecast through April 29 calls for near normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. This is good news for the blacks and grays.

The Indiana message boards are pretty quiet, but the ones in Kentucky are revving up. The Mammoth Cave area and Jefferson County, Ky., area have been producing a lot of blacks but only a few grays.

The Morel Festival of Brown County is being held April 25-27 at the Bill Monroe Music Park. General admission is $40 with kids under 12 free. More than 15 bands will perform. There will be guided hunts, a morel contest and a morel auction. Experts on mycology will even hold classes.

These dates should produce a mixed bag with few, if any, yellows. It may also give local turkey hunters fits.

For all the info go to www.morelfestival.com or call (800) 414-4677. Advanced tickets are available. Folks from neighboring states are coming to this shindig.

Brown County State Park and Yellowwood State Forest will give shroomers all the forest floor they could possibly want to hunt morels.

That same weekend the National Rifle Association will hold its annual meetings and exhibits in Indianapolis.

April 25 through April 27 attend the NRA's Guns, Gear and Outfitter Show at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Featured will be over nine acres of the latest and greatest rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers, ammo, optics, outfitters and accessories.

At Lucas Oil Stadium on April 25 at 1 p.m., you can attend the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum. Featured speakers will be Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, governors Bobby Jindal and Mike Pence and senators Marco Rubio, Dan Coats and Rick Santorum. In addition, radio talk show host Mark Levin and sheriff David A. Clark, Jr., will attend.
