ANDERSON — The 2014 Madison County Softball Tournament got off to a wild start at Liberty Christian on Wednesday night as Elwood and the host Liberty Christian Lions advanced with victories.
In Game 1, Elwood defeated Lapel 7-3 to advance to the winner’s bracket against Anderson. The Lady Panthers scored four runs in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead and freshman starting pitcher Mackenzie Bryan settled down after a shaky first inning to pick up the win.
Lapel scored two runs in the top of the first as McKenzie Land hit a two-run single, scoring Katelyn Willis and Kirsten Rich. Elwood countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Jessie Noone scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Panthers struck with one out in the second as three straight batters reached against Lapel starter MaKenzie McGuire. Bryan settled down after the shaky first, giving up only a triple to Rich in the third and a single to Brook Daniels in the seventh.
Elwood pounded out 10 hits in the game, Jessie Noone and Jessica Taylor each had two. Bryan pitched seven innings, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out six.
“I liked what I saw coming out. We hit the ball really well,” said Elwood coach Chris Noone. “Defensively we made the plays that came to us. We knew they (Lapel) have some good hitters and they were going to put the ball in play.”
McGuire took the loss, going four innings and giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Daniels pitched the final two innings, giving up one walk while striking out two. Elwood (2-0) advances to play Anderson today at Liberty Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Game 2 was a wild affair as the host Lady Lions overcame an 11-1 deficit to score a 14-12 win over Anderson Prep Academy.
