Tigers wear down Eagles

FRANKTON, Ind. — Evan Hodges rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, and Alexandria scored 41 unanswered points to spoil head coach Otis Cress' final homecoming at Frankton with a 48-14 victory.

Hodges' scores came on runs of 20 and 5 yards in the second half as the Tigers (4-2, 2-2 Central Indiana Conference) outscored their hosts 27-0.

The game was tight for much of the first half, with Alexandria taking the lead for the first time on Blaize Kelly's 10-yard touchdown pass to Drew Johnson with 2:36 to play. That put the Tigers ahead 21-14 and was part of a huge day for both players.

Kelly completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 265 yards and two scores. Johnson caught seven of those passes for 112 yards and one touchdown.

But it was Frankton (1-5, 0-4) that broke onto the scoreboard first.

The Eagles milked 5:45 off the clock on their opening drive, scoring on a 5-yard run by Nik Clark to go ahead 7-0. Alexandria answered less than three minutes later with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Jonah Jerrils.

But Frankton went back in front just before the end of the period when Clark scored from 18 yards out with 29.3 seconds left.

Clark carried 17 times for 71 yards, leading a Frankton attack that amassed 146 yards on the ground overall. The Eagles gained just 41 of those yards in the second half as Alexandria took control of the contest.

The Tigers tied the score on a 3-yard run by Kelly with 5:55 left in the second quarter, then took the lead for good on the scoring strike to Johnson.

Hodges' 20-yard touchdown run put Alexandria ahead 27-14 less than three minutes into the third quarter, and the Tigers surprised Frankton with an onside kick. But the ensuing drive stalled at the Eagles' 25-yard line, and Alexandria turned the ball over on downs for the second and final time.

The Tigers never punted in the contest. Frankton freshman Jack Rogers, meanwhile, averaged a healthy 37 yards on his four punts.

And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
