Rick Bramwell: Piney problem produces perplexing predicament

Piney squirrels can be more than a nuisance. They have stored nuts and chewed wires in my boat. They can do the same in houses and barns. Last winter, I declared war on two that had set up home in my yard. I haven’t seen any more until the other day.

I pulled into my drive and got a glimpse of a piney running through my kennel. Two days later, I walked out the front door and saw a piney at the base of my picture window. I made an about-turn and grabbed a shotgun.

When I approached the piney, he tried to climb up the side of the house. The little critter acted like he was sick. I approached, intending on knocking him away from the house. The piney leaped at my leg. I used the gun barrel to sweep him aside.

The piney ran to the base of a big maple but did not try to climb it. As I moved around the tree, the little rodent made a dash for a large shrub. He didn’t make it.

That night, I wondered if the piney might have rabies. I could freeze the carcass and have it tested. That next morning the piney was gone. Some predator probably bought whatever disease the piney had.

Two nights later, my headlights revealed a large raccoon in the yard. Had she eaten the squirrel?

On a recent bike ride, I stopped to watch a mowed patch of grass that lies between 20-acre woods and standing corn. This is a good place to see deer. What I saw instead was a young fox pouncing on a mouse.

I have been working at the Indiana State Fair this past week. The area I work encompasses the DNR Building. I haven’t had the time to volunteer at the Kids Fishin’ Pond but have paused to watch the activity.
