Benson bringing All-Stars to AU for games

ANDERSON, Ind. — Former Indiana University and NBA standout Kent Benson has moved his Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic from his hometown of New Castle to Anderson University this year.

The event, to be held June 20 and 21, is designed to showcase players from all size schools, both juniors and seniors, in an All-Star basketball format. For the previous five years, the games were played at New Castle.

"We had great support there in New Castle and I thank them for all they did for us," said Benson in a Tuesday telephone interview. "We were looking for a place where these players could be seen on a college campus by college coaches. We also were looking for a Christian university."

He found what he was seeking at Anderson University.

"Kent contacted us," said AU Athletic Director Marcie Taylor. "He wanted to see if we would be interested in hosting this event. We met with him and he saw what he was looking for. We are super excited to have the event here. It is a win-win for us."

Benson agreed and said, "Marcie Taylor and the whole staff has been great to work with. Anderson University has a great venue. We think it is a great fit. There are a lot of people who are used to traveling to Anderson for Colts Camp for instance."

There will be nine games played over a two-day span, four girls contests and five for the boys.

In those games, nine players with area connections will be participating.

On June 20, the juniors take the spotlight. The girls will have games at 12:30 and at 2 p.m. DaBriona Williams of Anderson and Katie Key of Frankton will play in one of those two contests. The boys games will be at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Chris Nunn of Liberty Christian will play in one of those games.
