Colts Notebook: New safety Adams up for a challenge

INDIANAPOLIS — Mike Adams chose to come to Indianapolis precisely because he wasn't promised anything.

The veteran safety understands there's a job opening in the Colts' defensive secondary, but he didn't ask general manager Ryan Grigson or head coach Chuck Pagano to hand him a spot in the lineup before deciding to end his long spring as a free agent.

"All Mike wanted was an opportunity," Pagano said. "He said, first thing to me when I talked to him on the phone when he was trying to make a decision was he said, 'Coach, I don't want to be handed anything. I don't want you to give me anything. I just want a fair shot. I just want an opportunity.' We said, 'Well, we've done that before, and we'll do it again. So welcome to the Colts.'"

Adams worked with the second team alongside fellow veteran addition David Sims during the opening day of a three-day minicamp Wednesday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center. Starter LaRon Landry missed the session while completing his physical examinations, and Delano Howell — one of the favorites to earn the starting job created when Antoine Bethea signed with San Francisco — sat out with an undisclosed injury.

Sergio Brown and Colt Anderson worked with the with first team, and Anderson made the day's lone interception against Andrew Luck.

Adams isn't likely to worry about any of that. The 33-year-old started in Denver's Super Bowl loss against Seattle in February, and he's looking forward to proving himself with a new team.

The fact that team is coming off an AFC South championship and a second straight playoff appearance makes it all the sweeter.

"Oh, it's very important, and that's one of the reasons why I came here because the pieces are in place and I've got a chance to hoist that trophy up at the end," Adams said. "That's my goal. I came here to win, and that's Chuck Pagano's philosophy. That's what they want to do here, and everybody has that in mind. Just winning. That's what it is. That's what it all boils down to."
