Key, Williams shine in All-Star Classic

ANDERSON — Two of the most promising girls players, who will be seniors this coming season, displayed their talents at Anderson University Friday.

Frankton's Katie Key and Anderson's Dabrionna Williams played for the Benson Red team in the Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic. There were four games Friday, all involving players who will be seniors this coming school year.

The Benson Reds lost to the Wilkerson Whites 93-85.

Key put together 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Williams finished with 12 points, two steals, two rebounds, a block and an assist.

But the stats and even the end result seemed less important after the game than the experience of competing with and against some high quality players.

"The competition made playing a challenge," said Williams. "We (Anderson) have McCutcheon on our schedule so I liked playing against No. 12 (Kerstyn Lowery). My goal is to be Miss Basketball and this shows much how much harder I have to work to get there."

"It was a good experience," said Key. "I had to learn about my teammates. By playing with them and watching them from the bench, I kind of figured out what their strengths were and what they liked to do."

The players were divided into groups of five on each team and subs were made at five-minute intervals, five at a time. The final five minutes the coaches were able to put any players they chose on the floor to finish the game.

The Reds were up 38-32 at halftime, but a spurt by the Whites midway through the second half gave them the lead for good. The Reds trailed by 11 late in the game but made a furious rush and cut the gap to four, but could get no closer.

Keith Edmonds, game day director, talked about the decision to move the game from its home for the first five years, New Castle, to Anderson University.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
