Liberty's Nunn shines in All-Star Classic

Liberty guard scores 19, wins mental attitude award

ANDERSON — Chris Nunn showed he belonged with the best juniors in the state on Friday night as his Indiana Class Basketball All-Star team defeated another group of juniors 101-75 at Anderson University.

The Liberty Christian guard finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, hitting 8-of-11 field goals, including a 3-pointer.

“I’m proud of how Chris played tonight and he represented the school well,” said Liberty Christian coach Jason Chappell. “He had a huge stat line, and he was surrounded by some great players. I just like the way his leadership has improved from his freshman year to now. He’s made great strides, and when Chris came in he was quiet and now he is a ham. The guys listen to him, and he’s a leader on the team.”

Nunn was also named the Mental Attitude Winner for his team in the contest.

“It’s a great honor for me to win, and I tried to keep a good attitude and be nice on the court,” said Nunn. “I thought I had a good performance. My mom told me before to just let the game come to me and be a team player. It was fun playing against kids that I know, and I’ve played against most of these kids.”

Nunn had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in the first half as his White team built a 56-21 lead. Nunn played 18 of 20 minutes, hitting 3-of-5 field goals and going 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

Team White led by as many as 39 points in the second half before settling on a 26-point victory. Park Tudor’s Bryce Moore was named the Most Outstanding Player after scoring 26 points.

Nunn still has one more season left at Liberty Christian, and after making it to the semistate round last year, he is hoping to take the next step in his senior season.

Robert Mathis is caught in an interesting predicament. The veteran outside linebacker finds himself preparing as hard as he can to play a football season that he will watch for the first month on television. That's the result of a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy, and it means fans will see less of the league's reigning sack champion on the practice field.
