Colts set to host ESPN during training camp

ANDERSON — ESPN is coming to Anderson University.

"The Worldwide Leader in Sports" will set up shop on campus during Indianapolis Colts training camp on July 28. Reporter Bob Holtzman and analyst Jeff Saturday, who started 188 games at center for the Colts from 1999 through 2011, are scheduled to be on hand.

The visit is part of a special "Training Center" series that will cover all 32 teams over 10 days on ESPN's flagship program, "SportsCenter." The feature begins Monday with a visit to the Buffalo Bills' training camp in Pittsford, N.Y., and continues through July 30.

NFL Network provided live coverage during one practice day last year for its "Inside Training Camp" series and might return this summer.

NBC also has set up a make-shift studio in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium in the past for interviews and photo shoots connected to its "Sunday Night Football" program.

But ESPN's presence is likely to be the most visible to fans.

The cable network plans to set up a stage somewhere on the practice fields and provide live updates throughout the day. Only four other training camps will host an on-site stage: the Bills, the New York Giants in East Rutherford, N.J., the Denver Broncos in Dove Valley, Colo., and the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Mass.

In addition to the "Training Center" feature, ESPN will provide live training camp updates on "NFL Insiders" and "NFL Live" at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily throughout the preseason.

The Colts report for training camp at AU on July 23, and their first public practice will take place July 24. Indianapolis will hold 16 open practices before camp breaks Aug. 13.

Colts Coverage The Herald Bulletin will publish a special training camp section on July 23 and plans to celebrate the Colts' 20th summer in Anderson throughout this year's camp. The special section will include a list of the 20 greatest Colts to train at AU and sports editor Rick Teverbaugh's picks for his 20 favorite people associated with the franchise since 1984. But we want readers to get involved as well. Have you made a special connection with a player at training camp? Do you have a favorite story involving a coach over the years? Email us at sports@heraldbulletin.com and let us know who has been your favorite Colt at training camp. We'll publish one fan's entry each practice day during this year's event.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
