---- — ANDERSON — Whether it was the heat or the difficulty of the course setup, scores went through the roof for most players at Harbour Trees Golf Course in Noblesville on Friday.
Anderson senior Morgan Nadaline finished the final day of the IWGA State Amateur Championship with a 78 and actually moved up one spot on the leaderboard.
Her scores for the tournament were 70-75-78 for a 10-over-par 223. That earned her a part of the three-way tie for fifth.
Emily Podzielinski of Noblesville had a 75 on the final day, but it was good to claim the title by a single stroke over Haley Kluth, also of Noblesville. Podzielinski finished at 4-over for the three days.
Nadaline was even par for the day after the first four holes Friday, getting a bogey, a birdie and two pars. But she had three bogeys out of the final five holes on the front nine for a 38.
Through the first four holes on the back, she was 1-over, but she bogeyed three straight par-4s. A bogey on No. 18 gave her nine for the round to go with two birdies and seven pars.
Nadaline had entered the day's play tied for sixth.
Podzielinski and Kluth used their home course knowledge to great advantage.
"I’ve spent a lot of hours on that (practice) putting green,” Podzielinski said to the crowd of participants according to an Indiana Golf Association report. "Winning on this course is really special.”
Podzielinski entered the final round with a one shot lead over Kluth after posting a second round, tournament low, 69. While her nearest competitors were finding the going difficult, Podzielinski fired a front nine even par 35 to extend her lead to 5 shots entering the back nine.
She then bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes and the lead was just three. After another bogey on 14, she seemed to have things firmly in control after a birdie 4 on the 439 yard par 5, 17th. That gave her a three shot lead with just the 138 yard par 3, 18th to play.
Her tee shot found a piece of Morse Reservoir that guards the green and after a drop and two putt she posted a double bogey, 5, which was still good for the one shot victory over Kluth who fired a two under par 34 on the back nine to solidify her runner up finish.
Podzielinski will be a red-shirt senior for the Arkansas Razorbacks team this coming fall.
Attempts to reach Nadaline for comment on Friday were unsuccessful.
