Big stage for small swimmers

ANDERSON — For the Anderson Community Aquatics Club, the numbers of the top competitive swimmers in the club is growing and that will be evident when the state-wide meet starts here today.

The Indiana Age Group State Championships begin today at the Indiana Natatorium and 11 swimmers will be competing for the Anderson club.

“This is our biggest group in five years since I came back for the second time,” said swim coach Todd Griner. “The first time I was here was in the 90s. When I came back this time I think we had four (going).”

Swimmers from the 10 and under group begin competition at 1:45 p.m. today.

Individuals in that group are: Allie Bramwell (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 IM) and Kennedy McCorkle (100 back, 50 back). There are also two relay teams from that group. For the 200 medley relay there is Kerrigan and Kennedy McCorkle, Allie Bramwell and Amber Lindzy. For the 200 Free Relay, there is Amber Lindzy, Allie Bramwell as well as Kennedy and Kerrigan McCorkle.

In the 11 and over group, Meri Gray (200 fly, 100 back, 100 fly, 200 free), Hannah Boerner (100 breast, 800 free, 200 breast, 1500 free), Noah Bozell (100 and 200 breast), and Alexa Bramwell (1500 free) made it in individual events. In the 200 free relay, Boerner, Gray, Bramwell and Faith Culp make up the team while on the 400 free relay the team consists of Boerner, Gray, Brazel and Bramwell.

This week some of the preparation has been a bit different.

“A lot of swimmers have been swimming distances,” said Griner. “They have been sharpening skills and getting aerobically sound. For the 10 and unders, it’s been pretty much normal. They may have worked on speed a little bit more.”

Two of the swimmers, Gray and Boerner, have competed on a senior circuit, which included college swimmers and those who are on track for the Olympic trials. This weekend those two plus Allie Bramwell and Kennedy McCorkel are in a position where their performances this weekend could qualify them for the USA Swimming Zone Championships from Aug. 1 to 4 in Genivea, Ohio.

Yet there are other goals that are reachable for all of the swimmers competing this weekend.

“We want them to come out better than they went in,” said Griner. “They can’t play defense. They can’t control how fast everyone else swims.”

All 11 are capable of having a good weekend.
