Rotary gives chance to reconnect

Coming into Thanksgiving week I am reminded that it is a time for family and friends to come together, sometimes unexpectedly.

For me, some of that will happen on Tuesday. I have been invited to the Rotary Club noon luncheon by Bob Shoemaker.

I have known and been friends with the Shoemaker family since my early days of high school. Bob's son Rob was one of my best friends in high school. I spent many an enjoyable day at the family home in Anderson enjoying hospitality and some backyard baseball games with Rob's sisters Ann, Sarah and Janet.

The occasion for this invite is two outstanding runners and bikers from this family are going to be Rotary's guest speakers — Jarrod Shoemaker and his wife, Alicia Kaye Shoemaker. Both are triathletes.

Jarrod represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. But his credentials go way beyond that. He won the New York City Triathlon in 2005 and has three times been the U.S. national triathlon champion.

He has competed in such locations as Australia, Brazil, the Caribbean, London and many other European countries to name but a few.

She was an alternate for the Canadian team in 2008 for the Olympics. This year she has competed in the Lifetime Health triathlon series and won every race. That series has visited Florida, Texas, Minnesota, Arizona and California among others.

I have never met Jarrod or Alicia in person. I am looking forward to that and to hearing what they have to say to those at the meeting.

It should be a great time. It will be enjoyable to get to see as many people from that terrific family as I can.

This will be yet another pivotal game today for the Indianapolis Colts. If the team still has designs to be the No. 2 or even the No. 3 seed in the AFC, then a win would be a huge step toward that goal.

Early in Thursday night's practice at Anderson University, Colts tight end Coby Fleener found himself running free behind the defense in 11-on-11 drills. Seconds later, a laser-like pass arrived just past his shoulder, and he had a free run to the end zone. A crowd of 7,540 erupted inside Macholtz Stadium, adding a unique energy to the lone evening practice of this year's training camp.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
