Arabians clip Eagles, go for Muller repeat

PENDLETON — The competitive feeling at Pendleton Height’s Bill Stoudt Field quickly faded Friday during the semifinals of the Nick Muller Memorial Baseball Tournament.

The Arabians once again took advantage of the opposing team’s generosity as Frankton pitchers gave up six walks and hit five batters, and Pendleton Heights took the 14-3 victory.

“It is good to take advantage like that, especially when you start off sluggish like we did,” Pendleton Heights coach Travis Keesling said. “You have to take advantage of what a team will give you any chance you can.”

With the score knotted at 2-2 after two innings, the Frankton struggles began and Pendleton Heights took control.

The Arabians opened the third inning with back-to-back bunt singles by Austin Ellingwood and Nate Grile. Frankton’s Bailey Threet proceeded to hit the next two Pendleton Heights batters, followed by a walk, and the Arabians quickly had a 4-2 lead.

“That is Pendleton Heights baseball, that is what we are going to do,” Keesling said of bunting. “That is the premise of our team … and you saw the results that stuff like that can start a big inning.”

With two outs and the bases loaded, Logan Robertson drove the first pitch he saw off reliever Bryce Mallernee into center field to drive in two more runs to make it 6-2.

Threet gave up six runs, all earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out two in just two innings of work.

“(The coaches) want us to go up there, and if it is a first-pitch fastball they want us to hit,” Robertson said. “But if (the pitcher) is not bringing it there or not what we want, they want us to wait.”

Robertson’s patience at the plate led to him collecting two hits in his three at-bats with a walk and two runs scored.
