2014 Colts mock draft

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts lack a first-round pick this year as a result of the Trent Richardson trade, making it more difficult than usual to project whom general manager Ryan Grigson will tab with his first selection.

The Colts have just five picks overall, beginning at No. 59 in the second round. Here is a look at one way those selections might play out this weekend:

Round 2 (No. 59 overall) — Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State

For the second straight year, Grigson turns to the national champion Seminoles for defensive help. Brooks is a former cornerback who clocked a 4.37-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. He projects as a free safety who could complement LaRon Landry, but he's also physical enough to give head coach Chuck Pagano — who cut his teeth coaching defensive backs — his desired flexibility.

Round 3 (No. 90 overall) — Jackson Jeffcoat, DE/OLB, Texas

The Ted Hendricks Award winner as the nation's best defensive end and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year has been compared to Washington Redskins standout Ryan Kerrigan. There are injury concerns, and he has struggled against the run. But the son of former Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Jim Jeffcoat could immediately aid the pass rush.

Round 5 (No. 166 overall) — Ross Cockrell, CB, Duke

Cockrell plays with a physical style that meshes well with Grigson's and Pagano's vision of a "horseshoe guy." He's adept at jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage and tallied 12 interceptions during his 48-game college career. Tackling is sometimes a concern, but he could add immediate depth at a relatively thin position.

Round 6 (No. 203 overall) — Zach Fulton, OG, Tennessee

How deep is this draft class? A 6-foot-5, 316-pound road-grader who started 28 of his last 31 games in the nation's toughest conference could still be on the board here. Fulton represents good value this late on Saturday and could add to the competition level at a position of need.

Round 7 (No. 232 overall) — Jonotthan Harrison, C, Florida

Last year's fourth-round pick, Khaled Holmes, appears to be in line for the starting center's job. Harrison provides badly needed depth and also has the versatility to play either guard spot.
