Sportsmanship winners honored

ANDERSON — Athletes who epitomize the adage that it's now whether you win or lose, but how you play the game were honored at the Anderson Rotary Club Sportsmanship Awards Tuesday at Anderson Country Club.

One athlete representing each sport from Anderson, Liberty Christian and Anderson Preparatory Academy attended the event. Each athlete was selected by the coach of that sport as the one who best displayed the qualities of sportsmanship and citizenship.

Then each of the winners at each school voted for an overall winner to represent the school. Those winners were Hillary Foreman of Liberty Christian, D'Andre Patterson of APA and Zach Abbott of Anderson.

Amy Conrad, Principal at Liberty Christian, introduced the individuals Lions who won for each sport. She then introduced swim coach Nicole Lyon, who made the presentation to Foreman. "She is such a blessing to me and to her peers," said Lyon of Foreman.

"I had been here for four years and watched teammates and friends get this award," said Foreman. "It is a thrill to get this award. On the field it is about sports and competition. But for me, the teams are my family."

APA Athletic Director David Bradford presented the names of his sport winners and then said this about Patterson, "He is always encouraging the younger players to improve and to always do the best they can. He's helped our track team to finish fourth in the county this year." Patterson was selected as a winner from the boys track team.

"At APA, the focus is more on grades than athletics," said Patterson. "I've got the good grades. I think sportsmanship is about putting the team ahead of yourself."

Anderson Athletic Director Steve Schindler introduced his sport winners and then brought up boys tennis coach David Ellis to introduce Abbott. "His sportsmanship on and off the field is exemplary," said Ellis.
