Softball pairings drawn by IHSAA

ANDERSON — If the most recent poll is any indication, Madison County tournament champion Pendleton Heights will be sitting in an unusual position when the softball sectionals begin on May 26.

Pairings for the 30th year of the tournament were drawn Thursday in the offices of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and 375 teams are entered in the four classes combined.

The Arabians host a 4A sectional and they, once ranked in the top five, are now unranked and have drawn a bye in that opening round. They will play on May 27 against the winner of the opening-round contest between New Castle and Connersville. The Trojans may be the favorites as the latest coaches' poll puts them No. 13 in 4A.

Anderson will play in the opening round at PH in a noon contest against Richmond. If the Lady Tribe wins that contest, they will play May 27 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the game between Greenfield and Mount Vernon. The title game there will be played May 28 at 7 p.m.

Frankton and Elwood are ranked together in the most recent poll, with the Eagles No. 16 in 2A and the Panthers No. 17. Elwood defeated Frankton on the Eagles' diamond on Thursday, but they are in different sectionals.

The Eagles are at Lapel. At that sectional there is just one game on May 26 and that is a 5 p.m. contest between Lapel and No. 4-ranked Wapahani. Frankton plays at 5 p.m. on May 27 at 5 p.m. against Winchester. Shenandoah is also in that field, but the Raiders drew a bye and will play May 27 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the May 26 game. The title game there will be May 28 at 5 p.m.

Elwood opens play in the Eastern Sectional on May 26 at 10 a.m. against Tipton. The noon contest pits Alexandria against Sheridan, followed by Madison-Grant against No. 5-ranked Eastern at 2 p.m. The semifinals there will be at 5 and 7 p.m. on May 28 with the title game at 5 p.m. on May 31.

In 1A, Liberty Christian and Daleville will both play at Wes-Del. The Broncos face Southern Wells at 10 a.m. on May 26, but the Lions wait until 5 p.m. on May 27 to tangle with Tri-Central. Should the Broncos win their first-round matchup, they will play at 7 p.m. against the host Warriors. The championship will be decided on May 29 at 5 p.m.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
