Rick Teverbaugh: Help needed with past standouts

One of the most daunting tasks we’d like to accomplish in improving our coverage of local athletes is keeping track of our prep standouts as they venture out into the college and pro ranks.

We tried contacting the area high schools through the athletic directors and coaches to get lists of where their graduates are. We have gotten only a handful of responses.

The information we need is the athlete’s name, the high school they came from, where they are now competing and in what sport.

That’s where you come in. Would you be willing to help us?

If you know of an athlete who graduated from an area high school and you have knowledge of the above information, please send that info to us by email at If you can help us, please put “Keeping Track” in the subject line for the email.

I know that most of the collegiate sports seasons are winding down now and during the summer there won’t be much to report, but we want these reports to be a weekly feature by the time the fall season begins. I hope we can compile a good list. Please include any athlete regardless of whether the sport involved is from the fall, winter or spring.

Here’s a example of such a tidbit of information we hope to regularly include in “Keeping Track.”

“Manchester University’s Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) has been named the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player in baseball. The All-HCAC squad is selected by a vote of the 10 conference head coaches. The junior shortstop guided the Spartans to a 26-17 overall record and a second straight HCAC regular season championship.

“Kimm hit .383 (41-for-107) in conference play and had 28 runs, 30 RBIs, seven doubles, five home runs and two stolen bases. He had a .607 slugging percentage and a .459 on-base percentage during league contests. Overall in 2014, Kimm ranks among the conference leaders in batting average (.347), slugging percentage (.571), runs scored (43), hits (59), home runs (9), RBI (44), total bases (97) and walks (23).”

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
