Baseball: Panthers rally to reach regional final

WABASH — Elwood overcame two costly fielding errors to defeat Southwood 7-5 during a Class 2A baseball regional semifinal at Chris Rood Field on the campus of Wabash High School on Saturday afternoon.

Elwood will face No. 1-ranked Wapahani for the regional championship tonight at 8.

The Panthers clawed their way back with two runs in the sixth inning after trailing 5-2, and the momentum carried over into the seventh.

Forrest Wright led off the seventh inning by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. The senior then broke from first and never slowed down as he rounded second when Dakin Updegraff laid a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line.

Southwood’s Brennan Kelly fired the throw over the third baseman’s head allowing Wright to score to tie the game at 5-5.

With two outs, Jared Bourff drilled a 1-0 pitch to deep center field and came in to to score the go-ahead run on Denver Mays’ infield single to shortstop.

Wright and Bourff each went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. London Leavell led the Panthers with two hits. Will Dailey had two RBIs on his lone hit.

Bourff pitched well but was let down by his defense in the third inning. With the score knotted at 2-2, fielding errors on back-to-back plays — first by Stephen Helping then by Leavell — allowed three runs to score, and Southwood was up 5-2.

The senior’s final line included five runs, two were earned, five hits, three strikeouts and one walk in three innings of work.

Elwood finished with four errors.

Wright came in to toss the final four innings and gave up just two hits while striking out five and walking one.
