Irvin gives Hamilton SE 2 straight Mr. Basketballs

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Star named Michigan recruit Zak Irvin Indiana’s Mr. Basketball for 2013 Wednesday and the second straight from Hamilton Southeastern in suburban Indianapolis.

The 6-foot-7 forward received 101 votes from Indiana coaches and media. Mishawaka Marian’s Demetrius Jackson was second with 46 votes, followed by Tipton’s Mike Crawford (37), Fort Wayne Northrop’s Bryson Scott (26) and Cathedral’s Collin Hartman (14).

Irvin’s selection follows that last year of Gary Harris, with whom Irvin played for two years. Harris went to Michigan State, where he won Big ten Freshman of the Year honors.

Irvin averaged nearly 19 points per game and accumulated 402 rebounds, 164 assists and 105 steals. During his three years on varsity, Hamilton Southeastern went 59-11.

Irvin began his high school career on the school’s junior varsity team, mainly because the varsity squad already was crowded. But Irvin wasn’t satisfied watching from the bleachers.

“I’m a competitor,” he told the Star. “I wanted to be out on the court for the varsity, not JV. But in the long run, it actually helped me out.”

Coach Brian Satterfield said Irvin improved markedly from his year in JV.

“He improved more than any other player I’ve coached in a high school career,” Satterfield said. “He definitely had some tools as a freshman, but he’s improved greatly in all facets. From not playing varsity as a freshman to starting three years and winning Mr. Basketball, he’s come a long way. Especially his defense; he really took that to heart. For as talented as he is offensively, he’s very versatile and special on the defensive end.”

When Harris won the Star title last year, he and Irvin discussed a possible repeat.

“That was one of the goals that I set,” Irvin said. “We both thought it would be pretty cool to see it happen.”

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
