Anderson Tennis Classic fires up today

ANDERSON — The Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic is holding its own as it enters its 34th season today at Anderson University.

Flying in the face of summer vacations and competition for the recreation dollar, the 2013 version of this Anderson summer staple is just about at the same level of participation as a year ago.

“We are down between 17 and 25 entries,” said tournament director John Rhodes. “When you look at the entries of most of the other tournaments around, they are down a bit as well. A lot of people seem to be on vacation at this time. It is something we’ll look at when this tournament is over. Maybe we need to move the dates.”

Still, the high profile divisions contain a good deal of star power.

In the Men’s A Singles, the two giants are still perched in opposite ends of the bracket and are pointed toward another title showdown. Alex Poe and Chris Zellinga are seeded No. 1 and 2 respectively. Both are scheduled to be in action at 11:15 a.m. Zellinga will face Matthew Conrad and Poe takes on Rishi Patel.

Those top two seeds could meet in Men’s A Doubles as well. Poe is teaming with Ben Wilson and they are the No. 2 seeds while Zellinga is at No. 1, teaming with Colin Atkinson. Neither of those teams will play before Monday.

The Women’s A Singles is less populated but Marcy Huck is the top seed and Carly Wilson is No. 2. In Women’s A Doubles, Alex and Michaela Hammel are the top seeds and the No. 2 team is Beth Zellinga and Kayla Negley.

Due to IHSAA high school moratorium rules, the varsity divisions can’t play before Monday. Lucas Bolt has the top seed in Boys Varsity Singles, while Charlie Webster and Grant Esposito are the top seeds in Boys Varsity Doubles.
